Long-term dreams and aspirations and believe having a positive outlook will help them to achieve those.

Research from Canada Life found 97% of people have aspirations for the future, with the top three goals cited as to be happy and content (67%), in good physical and /or mental health (58%), while 53% are seeking a good retirement.

Other aspirations include travelling, owning their own home, paying off debt, having a successful career, getting married, children and having grandchildren.

According to the research, nearly four in 10 (39%) believe having a positive outlook is how they are reaching their aspirations, while money and finance also feature highly. A similar percentage (38%) of people said they are using their salary and earnings to achieve their goals, while 37% are relying on budgeting and a third (34%) are using their savings.

Additionally, 52% of Britons have different bank accounts for different goals, a trend that was more prevalent among younger generations.

Lara Bealing, head of marketing at Canada Life, said: “It is clear to see the important role that having goals plays in our everyday lives and just how many of us have goals and objectives. Although thinking about the future can sometimes be uncomfortable, this research sheds light on the positive elements of life and what drives people forward. But there’s also clear acknowledgment that we can’t achieve what we’d like on our own.

“We know it’s critical to get advice, however, we also know it’s clear there is work to do for us to improve the accessibility of advice. We need to encourage more holistic conversations so clients feel confident in sharing their goals more openly to allow us to provide the best advice.”
