HSBC plans ‘substantial’ growth in ETF business

HSBC Global Asset Management is planning to substantially grow its ETF business in 2020 and into subsequent years. The firm currently manages USD49.3 billion in passive strategies1 and USD8.5 billion in ETF strategies.
In the first half of 2020, it will launch eight new ESG ETFs focusing on Europe, US, Japan, developed markets, emerging markets, Asia, UK and Europe ex. UK, as well as develop a fixed income ETF platform. Later in the year, it also plans to launch a passive platform for precious metals.
To support these initiatives, around 15 roles will be created in the the asset management arm next year, across different functions, including product development, operations, sales specialists, capital markets, marketing and ETF strategists.
Nicolas Moreau, Global CEO of HSBC Global Asset Management, commented: “ETFs are still one of the fastest growing investment products in Europe and Asia, and we are seeing increased demand from our clients for ESG-focused ETFs. Combining our responsible investment and ETF expertise is a natural next step for us. These launches will also provide our distribution partners with the right products to cater to the demand they see from their clients.”
