Beyond technical knowledge: What really makes an excellent paraplanner?

In the latest article from the PFS Paraplanning Panel, we explore what makes a great paraplanner. Rajveet Kaur Kang, Paraplanner Development Manager at Chase de Vere, says a mix of curiosity, a proactive nature, adaptability, reliability and being human is key.

Paraplanning has changed significantly over the years. What was once viewed largely as a technical support function is now an integral part of the financial planning process, playing a meaningful role in shaping advice, influencing client outcomes and supporting how firms operate.

As the role has evolved, so too have the expectations that come with it. Technical knowledge and qualifications remain a fundamental part of paraplanning.

They provide the foundation on which everything else is built. However, in my experience, they are not what truly sets individuals apart once that foundation is in place.

Most paraplanners, given time and the right support, can develop strong technical capability.

What is far harder to teach, and far more valuable in practice, is how someone thinks and how they apply that knowledge in the context of real client situations.

Be curious

The paraplanners who really stand out are those who look beyond the task in front of them. Rather than simply completing a report or carrying out research, they take the time to understand the purpose behind the work.

They consider the client’s objectives, the adviser’s rationale and whether the recommendation genuinely leads to the best possible outcome. That level of curiosity adds real depth to their role.

Alongside this is the ability to think independently. Strong paraplanners do not just focus on what is technically possible; they challenge themselves to consider what is practical and appropriate for the client.

Often, the best outcomes come from simplifying complex situations rather than adding further layers of technical detail. Recognising that balance is an important skill in itself.

Proactivity is key

Another quality that consistently differentiates excellent paraplanners is initiative. Delivering accurate and efficient work is expected, but those who go further tend to think ahead.

They will pick up on gaps in information, question inconsistencies and anticipate what might be needed next in the advice process.

Over time, this builds trust with advisers and positions them as a genuine partner, rather than simply a support function.

Communication also plays a far bigger role than it is sometimes given credit for. The strongest paraplanners are able to communicate clearly and confidently, whether that is through written work or in conversation.

They can challenge appropriately, ask thoughtful questions and explain complex concepts in a way that makes sense to different audiences.

This not only improves the quality of the advice but also strengthens relationships across the wider business.

Adaptability and reliability

There is, in my view, an additional layer of professionalism that defines the very best. It is reflected in the pride they take in their work and their focus on the end client outcome.

They are dependable, consistent and able to maintain quality even when working under pressure. In a role where priorities can shift quickly, that reliability is invaluable.

Adaptability has also become increasingly important. The environment paraplanners operate in continues to evolve, shaped by regulation, technology and changing client expectations.

Those who embrace this and remain open to developing both their technical knowledge and softer skills, are the ones who continue to grow.

Being human

Finally, there is the human element. Financial planning is ultimately about people and the decisions that shape their lives. Paraplanners who recognise this tend to produce work that goes beyond technical accuracy.

They consider how advice will be understood, how it will be received and whether it truly aligns with what matters to the client.

As technology continues to develop, access to technical information will only increase. What will continue to distinguish exceptional paraplanners is not just what they know, but how they think, how they communicate and how they contribute to better outcomes.

For me, the best paraplanners are those who elevate the people around them. They strengthen confidence, improve outcomes and quietly raise standards across the business.

That is what true excellence in paraplanning looks like.
