The fundamentals of emotional intelligence

8 June 2026

As an aspiring adviser, understanding emotional intelligence can really help you to build meaningful relationships with clients. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing some fab resources from Fidelity Adviser Solutions to help you develop your skills in this area.

Conversations with clients won’t always be easy. You could be supporting them through difficult times, explaining market ups and downs or talking them through important and impactful changes in legislation.

Financial planning tends to be quite emotive, and no one client is the same. As an adviser, you need to be able to adapt your communication style and to do that, you need to understand as much as you can about who you are working with to know what style to adopt.

Fidelity has some brilliant resources to help you develop the softer skills that advisers need.

Module 1: Managing client emotions and building trust

In this first module of four, James Woodfall – Communication and Behaviour Specialist, introduces the fundamentals of emotional intelligence and the importance of it within financial planning.

In this five-minute video, James calls out that because of technical training, something that is at the core for paraplanners, the softer skills needed to help guide clients, are often overlooked.

Not only does James talk about the importance of emotional intelligence for clients, he also focusses on your emotions through self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness and relationship management.

Research shows that these four components sit at the heart of emotional intelligence – doing the best job you can for your clients, starts with recognising your own emotional position and responses.
