The Financial Conduct Authority has issued a funeral scam warning, amid fears that people could be asked to make a false payment.
The City watchdog warned consumers to take care if they receive an unexpected call about their funeral plan, stating it may be a scam.
“Don’t engage if you get any unexpected calls from your funeral plan provider asking you to transfer money to top up your funeral plan due to the recent issue at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors,” the FCA said.
For those who are contacted, the FCA recommends ending the call immediately and contacting their funeral provider directly. It has also suggested consumers check if their funeral provider is authorised.
The warning follows the closure of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors after the firm ran up significant amounts of debt. The firm owed £51,508.46 for unpaid charges including cremation fees, prompting Hull City Council to issue a winding up petition.
