Covid-19, geopolitical instability, regulation and sustainability risks: investors have recently faced increased volatility across emerging and frontier markets. Which countries and companies will be the rising stars in a post-Covid environment? How should one structure Chinese equity exposure amidst the regulatory crackdown? How useful are ESG ratings in emerging markets, and what are the main sustainability challenges and opportunities over the next decade? Carlos von Hardenberg, co-founder of Mobius Capital Partners (MCP) and Portfolio Manager of the Mobius Investment Trust (MMIT), will provide an overview to the questions posed above.

Amidst uncertainty and volatility in EM, MCP’s alternative approach to information gathering, deep private equity-like due diligence process, and a focus on customised engagement on sustainability factors have provided the investment strategy with a distinct edge. MCP believes corporate culture has a clear long-term impact on a company’s success. In January 2021, MCP developed a proprietary ESG+C® (ESG+Culture) framework which Carlos will discuss in further detail.

MCP offers a single, unconstrained strategy with a focus on small and mid-sized companies in emerging and frontier markets. The firm was founded in 2018 by Dr Mark Mobius and Carlos von Hardenberg, who have been investing in emerging and frontier markets since 1987. Since inception in 2018, MMIT has delivered a NAV return of +52.8% and has outperformed the benchmark (MSCI EM Mid Cap Index GBP) by more than 27%.
