A month has passed since our 2026 Professional Paraplanner Awards, giving us an opportunity to forward from the celebrations and reflect on what this year’s entries, finalists and winners revealed about the paraplanning profession.
Every year, the awards provide a snapshot of a profession that continues to evolve. While recognising excellence remains the focus of the day, the entries also offer valuable insight so much more about paraplanning.
In this special 10th anniversary year, several themes have stood out, and we thought it would be good to share some of those observations with our readers.
Paraplanners are strategic contributors
One of the clearest trends evident across many of the entries was the growing influence of paraplanners beyond traditional report writing and technical research.
Increasingly, paraplanners are helping to shape processes, improve efficiencies, support business decisions and contribute to firm-wide initiatives.
For many businesses, paraplanners are no longer viewed solely as technical specialists. They are increasingly recognised as an integral part of delivering better client outcomes and driving operational success.
That shift reflects both the increasing maturity of the profession and the confidence firms have in the expertise, judgement and wider contribution of their paraplanning teams.
Technology is changing the role, not replacing it
Technology featured prominently across this year’s submissions, particularly in relation to artificial intelligence.
What was obvious in the examples given in the submissions, wasn’t that AI is replacing paraplanners – instead, firms are using technology to reduce administrative burdens, improve consistency and free up time for more valuable work.
Ultimately, technology is enabling paraplanners to expand their contribution, rather than diminishing it.
The message coming through from entrants was that technology delivers the greatest benefits when it supports professional expertise and enhances the advice process.
Technical excellence in abundance
While innovation and efficiency were recurring themes, technical excellence ran through almost every category.
Several judges commented on the depth of knowledge demonstrated by entrants and the impressive breadth of expertise they brought to their roles.
More importantly, entrants showed that technical knowledge alone is not enough. Time and again, submissions demonstrated an ability to apply that knowledge, analyse complex situations and arrive at well-considered solutions for clients and advisers alike.
Alongside this was a clear commitment to maintaining high professional standards and continuing professional development.
As legislation, regulation and client needs continue to evolve, technical expertise remains one of the profession’s defining strengths and one of the key ways paraplanners add value to advice firms and their clients.
Collaboration is a defining characteristic
Another notable theme was the emphasis on teamwork.
Many of the strongest submissions demonstrated how paraplanners are working more closely with advisers, administrators, compliance teams and providers to create better and more efficient client journeys.
The traditional boundaries between roles continue to blur, with collaboration increasingly recognised as essential to delivering high-quality advice and service.
The entries highlighted that some of the best outcomes are achieved when paraplanners are embedded at the centre of a firm’s planning process, working alongside colleagues across the business.
A profession that’s on the up
The overriding message here is that paraplanning continues to develop and expand its influence.
The quality of entries reflected a profession that is confident, full of ambition and is increasingly central to the delivery of financial planning.
One month on from the awards, it is clear that the event does more than celebrate excellence. It also provides a valuable opportunity to take stock of where the profession stands today and the direction in which it is moving.
If the 2026 awards are anything to go by, the future of paraplanning looks bright, and that is very much because of the wonderful paraplanning community.
