McPhail is a high profile figure and commentator in the industry, in particular in respect of pensions. He was the chair of the Transfers and Re-registration Industry Group (TRIG), the initiative that looked at how the industry could improve transfer times for consumers, and took the work into his role at STAR – a growing community of 60 firms from across the industry committed to improving customer experience of transferring savings and investments between companies – as founding chair of the STAR Steering Group,.

Commenting on his departure, STAR said McPhail would be missed “both in his capacity as chair and as a force for change in the industry”.

“Tom has been instrumental in helping to drive the industry towards improving transfer times, both as chair of the STAR Steering Group and his previous work as chair of TRIG.

“We thank him for his tireless work over the past year in helping STAR achieve significant milestones and we wish him every success in his new career outside of the financial services industry.

McPhail will be continuing in his role for the next month and will chair the next STAR Steering Group meeting.
