Investors concerned about negative AI outcomes

2 November 2026

Investors are worried about the potential negative outcomes of AI, new research from the Association of Investment Companies has revealed.

According to the AIC, almost three quarters (74%) of investors are concerned about misinformation, followed by job losses (73%) and loss of human skills (72%).

Loss of privacy (51%) and increased pressure on water resources (45%) were also highlighted as key concerns.

However, investors also acknowledged potential positive outcomes, such as improved access to healthcare and medical breakthroughs (68%) and the creation of new jobs and industries (51%).

Younger investors feel more positive about AI than their older counterparts, with 43% of under-45s believing that AI will have a positive impact on society and the environment compared to 29% of those aged 65 and over.

Among all investors, 34% see a positive impact, while 28% see a negative impact and a further 26% are on the fence.

Nick Britton, research director of the Association of Investment Companies, said: “Given the apocalyptic warnings from AI companies themselves, it’s no surprise that investors are concerned about potential negative impacts of AI.

“While fears predominate over hopes at the moment, the overall picture is one of uncertainty. Four in five respondents see both positive and negative impacts to AI, and many simply don’t know whether the net impact will be good or bad for society.

“As long as the AI investment boom continues and investors are making money, such fears may be overlooked – but if there is a market correction then AI companies may have to work harder to persuade investors that they can deliver growth while addressing their wider concerns.”
