PMX: Why we’re championing women in advice and what we’re seeing across firms

8 April 2026

Professional Paraplanner has teamed up with PortfolioMetrix (PMX) to bring investment and financial advice-based insights on a regular basis. PMX is a really supportive team and are playing their part to make a difference in the profession, IN this article, they introduce us to some of that support.

Progress across the advice profession has been noticeable in recent years, but meaningful gaps remain around representation, confidence and visibility, particularly for those starting out.

Through our work with advice firms, paraplanners and advisers, we continue to hear that people entering the profession don’t always see a clear pathway into or through financial planning. Confidence can also dip early on, even when capability is strong.

As the adviser role has evolved, the support structures around it hasn’t always kept pace. Many professionals also highlight the lack of open, practical discussion about what the job looks like in reality, and how day‑to‑day challenges can differ from firm to firm.

At PortfolioMetrix, we spend much of our time working directly alongside advice businesses. What becomes clear, again and again, is that strong client outcomes rely heavily on how well-equipped and supported advisers and paraplanners feel.

Technical training plays its part, but meaningful development also comes from the ability to share experiences, compare approaches and hear from others who’ve navigated similar situations.

This is where initiatives such as our Women in Advice and Young(er) Adviser come in.

Rather than operating as formal conferences, they’re deliberately small and conversational. The idea is to give people space to talk openly, exchange ideas and understand how others in similar roles tackle the same challenges.

Attendees frequently tell us that these sessions help reduce the sense of working in isolation and offer practical insights that they can put into action straight away.

For paraplanners, this kind of dialogue is especially valuable. Positioned at the heart of the advice process, they often have a unique perspective on how decisions are made, how consistently firms operate and how effectively investment strategies are translated for clients.

Despite this, they can sometimes be overlooked in wider industry discussions. Ensuring their experiences are heard is key to strengthening the advice ecosystem as a whole.

Looking ahead to the next session: 7th May 2026

Our upcoming Women in Advice session will explore the journey of female advisers and the different routes their careers can take.

The panel brings together advisers at a range of stages, including individuals who have moved into financial planning from entirely different professions.

Through a structured, interview‑style conversation, we’ll look at what has helped them progress, the challenges they’ve encountered, and the lessons that shaped their development.

The session will examine why many women flourish in advisory roles, the realities of working in an environment that still skews male, and the practical steps that can help build long‑term credibility and fulfilment.

The focus is on first-hand experience – honest reflections, personal turning points and the insights people say they wish they’d had earlier in their careers.
